October 10-11: Battle of the Nations 2015 FIM Europe Cup Final Assen
October 13, 2015
Some 21 Supermono riders from across Europe gathered at the Dutch Cathedral of Speed at Assen, Netherlands for the final races of the 2015 season.
After Q1 and Q2 Austrian rider Wimmer took pole on his Krämer KTM just before Jerry van de Bunt and guest rider Arie Vos. Row two was for Christian Schmeink, guest rider Niels Gerritsen and Ricaro van Duijn.
Race 1 Saturday October 10th : 14 laps
Guest rider Arie Vos onboard his 690 KTM pushed too hard on cold tires and crashed in the first lap whilst Lukas Wimmer took a direct lead followed by countryman Josef Frauenschuh. Dutch pilot Jerry van de Bunt had a bad start because of problems with the clutch, that is why he entered the first corner in 11th place. After that Jerry managed to overtake several riders and in lap 6 he even overtook Frauenschuh but the gap with Wimmer was a bridge too far. Wimmer took the checkered flag to finish followed by Jerry van de Bunt and Josef Frauenschuh.
As Wimmer already scored enough points for the 2015 championship title the Kraemer team organized a Saturday night party for winning the Championship. The party went on until late in the evening….
Race 2 Sunday 11th : 14 laps
Saturday night temperatures were cold, just below zero, but just at the start of the race at 13.10 PM the temperature became slightly better, approximately 10 degrees but still cold and windy. It seemed a repeating race of the previous Saturday as both Wimmer, van de Bunt and Frauenschuh were flipping coins for best positions. After a few laps the gap between Frauenschuh and van de Bunt became too big. What follows was a thrilling fight between Lukas and Jerry, but again, as the whole 2015 season Wimmer was in the end unbeatable because Wimmer took victory in the last lap. Arie Vos, who could have been a contender for a podium place crashed again in race 2.
With 8 consecutive wins Wimmer became 2015 FIM Europe Supermono Cup Champion and took an unique record as so far in history no rider took so many wins in just one season.
